A historic day for Poland, as officials announce the launch of the Euro 2012 Football Championship.

[Joanna Mucha, Polish Minister of Sport and Tourism]:
"Today we start tournament operations, with 23 days of competition ahead of us."

Speaking at a press conference at the Olympic Park in Warsaw Thursday, the Minister of Sport and Tourism said organizing the event stretched Poland's organizational capacities to the limit.

[Joanna Mucha, Polish Minister of Sport and Tourism]
"This tournament that we're organizing is the most difficult event, organizationally, that Poland has ever hosted and so it's certainly a huge challenge, but we're very well prepared and we're sure that the tournament will be a great success here in Poland and in Ukraine."

Among the biggest difficulties was timely completion of major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the national football stadium in Warsaw.

[Marcin Herra, President, PL.2012 Organizing Committee]:
"Four years ago many people were worried that this stadium wouldn't be ready to host the opening match, but today this stadium is a modern sports arena."

Adding to the heady mood ahead of Friday's kick-off is news that the final section of a highway linking Berlin to Warsaw was opened just a day earlier.

Since, according to official estimates, as many as 800,000 fans are expected from abroad, their trip here will now be that much smoother.
